Hydration Myths Debunked: Separating Fact from Fiction for Hair Health

There is lots of information on the internet about tips and tricks to get your hair hydrated and to keep it moisturized and flourishing but how many of these are actually facts and how many are fiction?

Myth: "You only need to hydrate your hair when it feels dry."

Fact: Hydration is an ongoing process, my friend! Regularly moisturizing your hair is key to maintaining its health and preventing dryness. Don't wait for your hair to feel dry before giving it some love.

Myth: "Oil treatments alone can hydrate your hair."

Fact: While oil treatments can help seal in moisture, they don't actually hydrate your hair on their own. You need water-based products to truly hydrate those lovely strands. Here’s when the “LOC” and the “LCO” methods of hair hydration come into play. The "LOC" stands for Liquid, Oil, and Cream. Here's how it works:

1. Liquid: Start by applying a water-based leave-in conditioner or a hydrating mist to dampen your hair. This provides the initial moisture.

2. Oil: Next, seal in that moisture with a natural oil like coconut oil, olive oil, or argan oil. Apply a small amount to your hair, focusing on the ends and any dry areas.

3. Cream: Finally, apply a creamy moisturizer or hair butter to further lock in the moisture. Look for products that contain ingredients like shea butter or aloe vera.

While the “LCO” method is the same but in a different arrangement:

1. Liquid: Start by applying a water-based leave-in conditioner or a hydrating mist to dampen your hair. This provides the initial moisture.

2. Cream: After applying the liquid, follow up with a creamy moisturizer or hair butter. This helps to seal in the moisture and provide extra hydration.

3. Oil: Finally, finish off by applying a natural oil like coconut oil, olive oil, or argan oil to lock in the moisture and add shine to your hair.

Both techniques work well for different hair types and its up to you to find your perfect fit.

Myth: "Drinking more water will automatically hydrate your hair."

Fact: Staying hydrated is important for overall health, but the water you drink doesn't directly hydrate your hair. To keep your hair moisturized, you need to use hydrating hair products and keep up with a good haircare routine. Like a good deep conditioner, using a hair mask and avoiding sulfates.

Myth: "You should wash your hair every day to keep it hydrated."

Fact: Washing your hair every day can actually strip away those natural oils and leave your hair feeling dry. It leads to the scalp being dry and that can lead to an increase in dandruff production etc.  It's all about finding the right balance based on your hair type and individual needs.

Myth: "Using hot water helps hydrate hair better."

Fact: Hot water can actually do more harm than good. It can strip away moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Stick to lukewarm or cool water when washing and rinsing your hair to maintain its hydration.
